New Gas Processing Plant will Save the Nation $500m, Create 1,000 Jobs - Finance Minister

Atuabo, Western Region - 13 May, 2025 - Ghana's Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has emphasized the importance of expediting the implementation of the country's Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II) project.

The project, which has been long overdue, is expected to save Ghana nearly $500 million and create over 1,000 jobs.

Dr. Forson made this call to action during the inauguration of the Implementation Committee for GPP II, alongside Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor.

He urged the committee to finalize their implementation plan within four weeks, stressing that the nation is counting on them to deliver.

''I reminded the committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister for Energy, that the time for bureaucracy is over. The nation is counting on them to deliver, and I’ve given them four weeks to finalise their implementation plan.

The Finance Minister highlighted the significance of the project, noting that Ghana currently spends over $1 billion annually on expensive liquid fuels to power its plants. He expressed confidence that GPP II would be a game-changer for the country's energy security, economic stability, and national welfare.

''Atuabo Gas has been a lifeline for Ghana. GPP II will be a game-changer for our energy security, economic stability, and national welfare.

The Atuabo Gas Plant has been a vital component of Ghana's energy infrastructure. The new plant is expected to build on this success, providing a more stable and efficient energy supply.

Dr. Forson assured that the government is committed to seeing the project through to completion.
