ECG and GRIDCo Issue Apology After Power Outage Hits Parts of Ghana

Accra, Ghana - 01 May, 2025 - A widespread power outage has hit parts of Ghana, including Accra and the Western, Central, and Northern regions, due to a system disturbance on the national grid.

According to a joint statement by the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana, the outage occurred at 1:42 pm on Thursday, May 1, 2025, when a tipper truck accidentally damaged a transmission line near Nkawkaw.

“The disturbance occurred at 1:42 pm on Thursday 1st May, 2025, when a tipper truck discharging stones at a private developer’s construction site near our Nkawkaw – Konongo Transmission Line, lifted its bucket into the line conductor, damaging the line and causing the disturbance.”

This incident caused all power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso to trip, taking off supply to the Western, Central and Northern parts of the country, as well as some customers in Accra.”

The incident caused several power plants to trip, resulting in a significant loss of power supply. Engineers from GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana have been deployed to the affected area to repair the damaged transmission line.

The companies have assured the public that work is ongoing to restore power to all affected areas by 6 pm on Thursday.

“Our engineers have mobilised to the location to repair the damaged transmission line and work is on-going to restore all affected areas by 6pm today,'' portions of the statement read.
