Electoral Commission Declares NPP's Boakye-Yiadom Winner in Obuasi East
Ghana's Electoral Commission has announced a surprise twist in the Obuasi East parliamentary election, declaring Patrick Boakye-Yiadom of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) the winner after a contentious recount ¹. Boakye-Yiadom retained his seat in Parliament, narrowly edging out Samuel Aboagye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a mere 19 votes.
The recount was sparked by allegations of discrepancies during the initial vote-counting process. The exercise was closely monitored by officials from both the NPP and NDC, as well as election observers and local residents. To ensure transparency and security, the re-collation took place under strict protocols at the Greater Accra Regional Office in Accra.
According to the Electoral Commission, Boakye-Yiadom secured 18,558 votes, while Aboagye garnered 18,539 votes. Independent candidate Adjei Owusu Afriyie trailed behind with 424 votes.
