Election 2024: Voting officially comes to a close as counting begins
After a day of casting ballots, voting has officially come to a close across polling stations in Ghana. The 2024 general elections, which commenced at 7:00 AM, saw citizens from all 276 constituencies head to the polls to elect a new president and Members of Parliament.
According to reports, the voting process was largely peaceful and orderly, with voters queuing up as early as 6:00 AM at some polling stations.The Electoral Commission of Ghana had set up 40,647 main polling stations nationwide to facilitate the voting process.
With polls now closed, the focus shifts to the sorting and counting of votes. Electoral officials, party agents, and observers are stationed at polling stations to ensure transparency in the process..
The results from polling stations are expected to be collated and transmitted to the constituency and national centers for official declaration in the coming hours.
The 2024 general elections mark a significant milestone in Ghana's democracy, with 13 presidential candidates and over 800 parliamentary candidates vying for seats. The elections are seen as a two-horse race between Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) and former President John Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
