Election 2024: Ghana's EC raises security concerns after attacks on personnel

Ghana's Electoral Commission has raised concerns over the safety of its personnel during and after the recent December 2024 elections. The Commission reported that some of its members were attacked by party supporters, despite the presence of security personnel who were unable to intervene effectively ¹.

Dr Srebour Quaicoe, Director of Training at the Electoral Commission, emphasized the need for improved security measures at collation centers and for EC officers at an event organized by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

He stressed that without adequate security, the electoral process is compromised.

“So we need to also talk of the security of the processes. Because if you don’t have the security, no matter how well you prepare for it, it will come to nought,'' he stated.

“…Now no part of the collation centre is safe because they can come in at any time. The commission had wanted to meet today to have a look at if it can re-collate… I don’t think collating results where people know the results from the polling station should be something that we should be fighting over. So, please, we all need to think around it,’ he added.

The Commission's concerns come after a series of incidents marred the December 2024 elections. The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) presented its findings on the election incidents during the event and highlighted the need for stakeholders to engage in discussions about improving security measures.
