Election 2024: EC makes U-Turn on Election Centre Restrictions

In a surprise move, Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) has made a U-turn on its previous decision to limit media access to key election centers. This reversal comes after intense deliberations and consultations with major media stakeholders.

In a statement released on Dec 2, the EC stated that from December 7, 2024, journalists accredited to cover polling stations will now be allowed to access constituency and regional collation centers using the same credentials.

According to the EC this updated accreditation system aims to promote transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.

The EC's change of heart reflects its commitment to ensuring that the media can effectively cover the elections. By providing greater access and flexibility, the commission hopes to maintain the highest level of transparency and accountability in its operations.

While arrangements for media access to the National Collation Centre are still pending, this reversal is seen as a significant step towards promoting a free and fair electoral process in Ghana.
