EC halts ballot paper printing following Akua Donkor's passing
Akua Donkor was the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP)

Accra, Ghana - October 29, 2024 - The Ghanaian political landscape has been shaken by the sudden passing of Madam Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). As a result, the Electoral Commission (EC) has requested that the GFP nominate a new presidential candidate within 10 days.

This development has also led to the temporary halt of presidential ballot paper printing, which was near completion.

Akua Donkor's death has left a significant void in the party and Ghanaian politics, where she was a prominent advocate for farmers' and women's rights. The GFP is now under pressure to swiftly nominate a suitable replacement to ensure their participation in the upcoming general elections.

In situations like this, the EC follows specific guidelines. If a candidate dies before the election, the timing of the death determines the course of action. Since Akua Donkor's passing occurred after nominations closed, the GFP has 10 days to nominate a replacement candidate. The election will then be postponed for a period not exceeding 21 days from the date the new candidate is nominated.
