Accra, Ghana - Nov 15, 2024 - Ghana is gearing up for its 2024 general elections, and fact-checking has become a critical component in the fight against misinformation. Albert Dwumfuor, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, has emphasized that verifying information before sharing it is crucial, especially during elections.

This comes as social media platforms are flooded with fake news and disinformation spread by users and political party supporters.

To combat this, the Ghana Journalists Association has partnered with the Spanish Embassy and Casa Africa to organize a two-day fact-checking training for journalists.

Speaking at a fact-checking training event for journalists at the Spanish Embassy, Dwumfour stated that the training aims to equip journalists with the skills to identify and debunk false information, promoting accountability journalism in the Ghanaian media ecosystem.

“Fact-checking is crucial and it is essential to verify information before sharing it, especially during elections. We must be cautious of sources with vested interests and biased agendas.

“As Journalists, we need to remember that reputable fact-checking organisations and independent media outlets are vital in separating fact from fiction. It is the only surest way of not falling prey to disinformation. Effective fact-checking is non-negotiable going into the December 7 elections.”

“As the leader of the umbrella body for all journalists in the country, my concern now is the safety and well-being of journalists before, during, and after the elections. We have a constitutionally mandated duty to play a role in shaping the narrative of this election. Our audiences—readers, listeners, and viewers—must be well informed to make informed decisions at the polls,'' he added.
