EC wants to twist the hands of voters in Dome Kwabenya with rerun directive - PPP
Accra, Ghana - December 30, 2024 - A contentious decision by Ghana's Electoral Commission to hold a rerun election in the Dome Kwabenya constituency has sparked outrage from the Progressive People's Party (PPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The rerun, slated for the Abokobi Women's Development Centre, has been deemed "unlawful" by the PPP, which accuses the Electoral Commission of attempting to manipulate the outcome in favor of the New Patriotic Party candidate, Mike Oquaye Jnr.
The PPP has urged the Electoral Commission to reconsider its decision, arguing that it undermines the democratic process and disregards the will of the voters. The party's national chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, released a statement on December 30, emphasizing that the decision is "an unfair machination to twist the hands of the voters".
“The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has taken notice of the Electoral Commission’s decision to run fresh elections at the Abokobi Women Development Training Centre polling station within the Dome Kwabenya constituency.
“We call on the EC to desist from such acts as they are unlawful and amount to an unfair machination to twist the hands of the voters who have already taken time out of their busy schedules to make their choices known on December 7th 2024.
“This bizarre decision of the EC is an attempt to influence the outcome of the Dome Kwabenya constituency parliamentary elections to favour the New Patriotic Party candidate, who clearly lost to the NDC candidate,'' portions of the statement read.
This development comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding Ghana's recent elections. The Electoral Commission had previously suspended the re-collation of results for the Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North constituencies due to discrepancies and missing documentation.
