Let's Work Together to Maximize AfCFTA Benefits - Mahama tells Ruto
Nairobi, Kenya - December 30, 2024 - Ghana's President-elect John Dramani Mahama has held talks with Kenyan President William Ruto, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening regional ties and enhancing trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The two leaders met in Kenya, where they discussed ways to deepen cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, and tourism. Mahama expressed his gratitude for President Ruto's longstanding support and extended an invitation to his inauguration on January 7.
Mahama, a former Chair of the African Union's High-Level Committee on Trade, emphasized his dedication to expanding trade among African nations in a post on his X account (formerly Twitter). He stated that strengthening relations between Kenya and Ghana would be a key priority, with a focus on creating opportunities for citizens and promoting mutual prosperity.
“It was a great opportunity to discuss our regional integration efforts, continental security and how we can work collectively to upscale the benefits of the AfCFTA. As a former Chair of the AU high-level committee on Trade, I remain committed to expanding trade among our countries under the aegis of the AfCFTA. We shall strengthen relations between Kenya and Ghana,'' portions of his statement on X read.
President Ruto welcomed the initiative, confirming his commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations. He also thanked Mahama for endorsing Raila Odinga's candidacy for the African Union Commission chairperson position. President Ruto has confirmed his attendance at Mahama's swearing-in ceremony.
The meeting marks a significant step towards enhancing regional cooperation and promoting economic growth in Africa. As Mahama prepares to take office, his commitment to strengthening regional ties and promoting trade is seen as a positive development for the continent.
