Dome Kwabenya Falls to NDC as Elipklim Akurugu Clinches Seat in Election Upset
In a stunning reversal of fortunes, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clinched the Dome Kwabenya constituency seat, breaking the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) two-decade stranglehold on the area. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC's parliamentary candidate, garnered 51,634 votes, edging out her NPP counterpart, Mike Oquaye Jr., who secured 50,477 votes.
This landmark victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Ghana, as the NDC makes inroads into traditional NPP strongholds. The Dome Kwabenya constituency, with its sizable electorate of over 173,000 voters, has historically been a bastion of NPP support.
Akurugu's triumph is seen as a major coup for the NDC, which has been working to expand its footprint in the region. The party's strategy of targeting key constituencies and mobilizing grassroots support appears to have paid off, at least in the case of Dome Kwabenya.
