Dumsor is back - Mahama slams gov't over power crisis, alleges $2 billion debt

Oti Region, Ghana - Nov 5, 2024 - John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) Presidential Candidate, has accused the government of attempting to shift responsibility for Ghana's ongoing power crisis onto a future NDC administration, should his party win the upcoming election.

Mahama claims the government has concealed the full extent of the electricity issues by refraining from issuing a load-shedding timetable.

He attributes the crisis to Sunon Asogli's withdrawal from the power supply sector due to unpaid debt. The NDC flagbearer also alleged the administration plans to leave an estimated $2 billion debt in the energy sector for the next government, severely constraining future solutions.

Mahama made these remarks while addressing supporters in Ehiamankyene, Oti Region. He stated that "dumsor has returned" due to the government's untruthfulness, and they're trying to shift this burden onto the NDC.

“We do not have a stable plant because Sunon Asogli has shut down its plant due to significant unpaid debt owed by the government. As a result, dumsor has returned and this is because the government is not being truthful with Ghanaians, in our previous administration we implemented a load-shedding timetable to manage the crisis but the current government refuses to do so because they fear being blamed for bringing back dumsor.

“However the reality is that dumsor is back, they know the NDC is likely to come to power, so they are trying to shift this burden onto us, additionally they are planning to pass an estimated bill of two billion dollars in debt within the energy sector to the next NDC administration,” he stated.
