Court Orders Arrest of Akwatia MP for Contempt

Koforidua/Eastern Region, Ghana - 19 Feb, 2025 - A High Court in Koforidua has found Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, guilty of contempt of court.
This ruling comes after Kumi ignored a court order barring him from being sworn in as a legislator due to an ongoing legal dispute.
Despite the court's directive, Kumi took the oath of office in Parliament, prompting the court to cite him for contempt. Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe issued a bench warrant for Kumi's arrest after he failed to appear for sentencing.
The court rejected attempts by the Minority Caucus in Parliament to justify Kumi's absence, stating that he had willfully defied the court's authority. With the bench warrant in effect, authorities are now expected to enforce Kumi's arrest and ensure compliance with the court's ruling.
