Council of State steps in to resolve Parliamentary deadlock
Alban Bagbin is Ghana's speaker of Parliament

Accra,Ghana - October 30, 2024 - In a significant development, the Council of State has assured Speaker Alban Bagbin of its support in resolving the parliamentary impasse that led to the indefinite adjournment of sittings.

On October 30, 2024, Council Chairman Nana Otuo Siribour II led a delegation to meet with Speaker Bagbin, where he briefed the Council on the ongoing crisis and his efforts to uphold Ghana's democracy.

At the meeting, Bagbin emphasized his commitment to upholding Ghana's democracy and fulfilling his duty to the people.

The Council commended Bagbin for his efforts to safeguard democratic standards through effective legislative management.

Parliamentary Recall

In response to MPs' requests, Speaker Bagbin plans to shorten his visit to Australia, originally scheduled for November 3-8, to facilitate an early November recall of Parliament.

Background

At the heart of the dispute is Bagbin's attempt to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, a decision blocked by the Supreme Court following a writ filed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Bagbin's application to overturn the Court's ruling was rejected, with the case adjourned until November 18.
