Attorney General withdraws charges against Ofosu Ampofo
Accra, Ghana - 29 Jan, 2025 - The Ghanaian government has withdrawn all charges against two top officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the former National Chairman of the NDC, and Anthony Kwaku Boahen, the party's Communications Officer, bringing an end to a lengthy and highly politicized trial.
The two were accused of conspiracy to cause harm and assault against a public officer, following a leaked audio recording.
The leaked audio recording allegedly revealed a disturbing conversation involving plans to commit serious crimes, including kidnappings, arson, and verbal assaults on prominent individuals. Specifically, the targets mentioned included Prof. Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the National Peace Council, and Jean Mensa, Electoral Commission Chairperson.
However, the NDC officials denied the charges, claiming they were targeted for political reasons.
The Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, announced the withdrawal of the charges, citing reasons that were not immediately clear. The move has been welcomed by the NDC, which had accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of pursuing a vendetta against its leaders.
