Chief Justice Torkornoo's Fate to be Determined After Court Dismisses Suits in 4-1 Decision

Accra, Ghana - 22 May, 2025 - In a significant ruling, Ghana's Supreme Court has dismissed two lawsuits challenging the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, allowing an inquiry committee to proceed with its investigation into her conduct.

The Court's 4-1 majority decision found that the lawsuits, filed by private citizen Theodore Kofi Atta-Quartey and the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES), lacked merit.

The plaintiffs had argued that President John Mahama's suspension of the Chief Justice was unconstitutional, and sought to invalidate the suspension and halt the committee's work.

However, the Court's ruling paves the way for the committee to continue its probe, which could potentially lead to the Chief Justice's removal from office.

The Supreme Court's decision was made by a panel of five judges: Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu, Yonny Kulendi, Henry Anthony Kwofie, and Yaw Asare Darko, with Justice Darko casting the dissenting vote.

The decision brings clarity to the situation, and the committee will now proceed with its investigation, determining the future of Chief Justice Torkornoo's tenure.
