Economic Hardships, Protests Eroded Public Trust in My Administration - Akufo-Addo

Lagos, Nigeria - 21 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has publicly acknowledged that his government's struggles to manage the economy, coupled with widespread protests, severely damaged his administration's reputation.

Speaking at the launch of a book authored by former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on Ghana's economy, necessitating an IMF bailout.

According to him, the economic hardships that followed led to widespread protests, which eroded public trust in his government.

“We faced a major economic crisis and with the world’s capital markets close to us, we ended up going to the IMF. Not an easy decision to make. The economic difficulties brought people onto the streets,'' he stated.

“I will say that even though the demonstrations were not on the scale of the SAP riots that are recalled and described in the book, they were serious enough, feeding into the growing disaffection against the government,'' he added.
