Accra ,Ghana – October 10,2025 - Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released from police custody after spending three nights behind bars. Wontumi's release came after he fulfilled bail conditions totaling GH₵25 million in two separate illegal mining cases.

According to reports, Wontumi's lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that all bail conditions had been met, paving the way for his client's release. The bail conditions included a GH₵15 million bail with two sureties in one case and an additional GH₵10 million bail with two sureties in the second case, one of which must be justified with landed property.

Wontumi's troubles began when he was arrested and charged with multiple counts of unlawfully undertaking mining operations and facilitating environmental destruction in the Tano Nimire Forest Reserve. He was subsequently arraigned before the Criminal Court in Accra, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The NPP chairman's arrest and detention sparked widespread concern among party faithful and supporters, who saw the move as a witch-hunt. Wontumi's lawyer had expressed frustration with the bureaucratic processes involved in securing his release, citing delays in verifying and evaluating properties presented as sureties.

Upon his release, Wontumi's supporters and lawyers celebrated his freedom. His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, expressed satisfaction that the bail conditions had been met, allowing his client to regain his freedom. Wontumi, known for his flamboyant style, flashed a bright smile as he exited the court premises, waving to supporters and well-wishers.

The case has attracted significant attention, given Wontumi's prominent position in the NPP and the broader national debate surrounding illegal mining activities.
