Accra, Ghana – 18 July, 2025 – The Mahama government has revealed that the National Cathedral project, initiated by former President Akufo-Addo in 2017, has incurred a staggering cost of $97 million despite stalling at the foundation level.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed this information at a media briefing in Accra on July 18, 2025.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu revealed the project has incurred a total cost of $97 million, contrary to initial estimates. Breaking down the costs, Ofosu stated that $58 million has been spent so far, with an additional $39 million outstanding payment owed to the contractor. This skewed contract according to the Minister continues to accumulate costs daily, despite construction having stalled.

This comes after an audit report highlighted multiple financial and governance lapses, further undermining public trust in the project's execution and management with some critics questioning the project's transparency and accountability.

The National Cathedral project has become a polarizing public expenditure undertaking, with many questioning the use of state funds. The current Mahama administration has assured the public of its commitment to full accountability, promising further disclosures as investigations continue.
