Accra, Ghana - 11 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has defended the state's decision to drop several high-profile court cases, citing concerns that they were motivated by politics rather than a genuine pursuit of justice.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the cases in question were part of a broader effort to silence key opposition figures and intimidate critics of the previous administration.

Kwakye Ofosu singled out the cases against former Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo as examples of politically motivated prosecutions.

However, Kwakye Ofosu in an interview with Channel One TV, he insisted that the decision was necessary to correct past injustices and promote national reconciliation.

“I have always maintained that what justification existed for prosecuting Ofosu Ampofo and leaving out the state-sponsored terrorists who engaged in the mayhem at the Ayawaso West by-election?” he questioned.

“There was a commission of inquiry that prescribed sanctions for them. The government refused to act on it. Rather, it chose to go after the chairman of the opposition party, accusing him of convening a meeting to discuss a response to the attack that NDC members suffered. This was clearly a travesty of justice,” he added.

“There is no doubt that the Ato Forson case was instituted to silence him as a ranking member of the Finance Committee when the E-Levy debate came up. The Appeals Court threw it out,” he added.

The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, is expected to provide further details on the decision in a forthcoming press conference.

The Minister's comments come amid ongoing debate about the decision to discontinue the cases, with some critics arguing that it undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent.
