Bawumia Leads NPP Presidential Race with 70.6% But NDC Supporters Back Ken Agyapong - Survey
Accra, Ghana - 23 June, 2025 - Ghana's opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for a crucial electoral contest in 2028, and a recent Africa Policy Lens survey reveals a clear frontrunner in the race for the party's flagbearer. Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the top choice among NPP supporters, commanding a commanding 70.6% of support, according to the survey's findings.
In contrast, NPP stalwart Kennedy Agyapong trails behind with 21.4% of the party's supporters backing him as the potential candidate. The survey's findings suggest that Dr. Bawumia's broad national appeal, evident in his lead across 12 out of 16 regions, reinforces his image as a unifying candidate with cross-regional support.
Supporters of Dr. Bawumia attribute his popularity to several factors, including his northern heritage, which is viewed as a strategic electoral asset. This demographic could enhance the NPP's competitiveness in traditionally NDC-dominant regions and project the party's image as inclusive and national.
Interestingly, the survey also revealed that Kennedy Agyapong enjoys considerable popularity among supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), with 48.4% backing him. Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia receives support from 35.3% of NDC respondents, highlighting a unique cross-party dynamic in the next elections.
The regional breakdown of support shows Dr. Bawumia's dominance in northern Ghana, where he is expected to secure significant support even among NDC voters. However, the findings also indicate that Dr. Bawumia faces challenges in traditional NDC strongholds, areas that will require strategic campaigning to ensure a nationwide victory in the upcoming elections.
