Asantehene Orders Funeral Ban Across Asanteman as Tribute to Late Asantehemaa
Kumasi, Ghana – 12 August, 2025 – The Manhyia Palace has announced a temporary ban on all funeral celebrations in Asanteman on August 21, 2025, to allow for a unified period of mourning and reflection in honor of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
This decision is part of the preparations for the one-week observation of her passing, which will be observed by the Asante Kingdom. The ban is intended to ensure that the kingdom comes together to pay their respects to the revered queen mother in a dignified and respectful manner.
The revered Queen Mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, died on Thursday, August 7, 2025. The 98-year-old monarch, who reigned for eight years, was the elder sister of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III was born in 1927 at the Benyaade Shrine in Merdan, Kwadaso, Kumasi. She succeeded her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, in 2017 at the age of 90 and reigned for eight years. During her reign, she was known for her wisdom, kindness, and commitment to justice, often resolving disputes impartially and to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
The late Asantehemaa was celebrated for her generosity and philanthropic efforts. She launched an annual breastfeeding campaign and made significant donations to the Mother-Baby Unit, Paediatric Emergency Care Unit, and Paediatric Emergency Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Manhyia Government District Hospital. Her selfless acts earned her recognition, with the Saviour Church naming the Nana Konadu Saviour School in her honor.
Asanteman is paying tribute to Nana Konadu Yiadom III, with many describing her as a pillar of continuity and tradition. Her legacy will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to the preservation of Asante culture and customs.
The one-week observance will be a time for the Asante people to come together and pay their respects to the late monarch.
