Catholic Bishops Warn Against Chief Justice Suspension
Accra, Ghana – 24 July, 2025 – The Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference has raised serious concerns about the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that the move could undermine the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The suspension, carried out by President John Dramani Mahama after a prima facie case was established in petitions seeking her removal, has sparked fears about the potential politicization of the judiciary.
The Bishops in a press release they issued emphasized that the removal of the Chief Justice must not be used as a tool for political interference, stressing that a healthy democracy demands an independent and credible judiciary, free from political interference.
The Conference cautioned that any action perceived to compromise judicial independence could erode public trust and fuel national discord, underscoring the critical need to safeguard judicial independence.
The Bishops also condemned recent electoral violence, notably the incident in the Ablekuma North Constituency, and called for prompt and transparent investigations, implementation of past electoral reform recommendations, and a depoliticized approach from state institutions.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a lawsuit at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja, Nigeria, alleging human rights violations in relation to her suspension and potential removal from office. She argues that her suspension occurred without a final determination of the petitions filed against her, effectively impairing her right to function and serve in her constitutionally appointed position.
The Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference has urged all stakeholders to act with impartiality and foresight as the nation approaches future electoral contests. They emphasized the importance of maintaining the rule of law, respecting the doctrine of separation of powers, and ensuring that the judiciary remains independent and impartial.
The suspension of the Chief Justice has sparked a national debate about the role of the judiciary in Ghana's democracy and the potential risks of politicizing the institution. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that the rule of law and judicial independence are upheld.
