AMA Bans Drumming and Noise-Making in Accra from May 12 to June 12

Accra, Ghana - 09 May, 2025 - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a month-long ban on drumming and noise-making in the capital city, effective from May 12 to June 12, 2025.

This annual ban is part of the traditional Homowo festival, observed by the Ga people, and is enforced in collaboration with the Ga Traditional Council (GTC).

The AMA in a statemnet cautioned that during this period, residents and organizations are expected to adhere to strict guidelines. While churches can continue with their worship services, they are required to keep the noise within their premises and refrain from using musical instruments.

According to the statement, the use of loudspeakers outside churches, mosques, or pubs is also prohibited, and roadside evangelism is suspended.

The AMA emphasized the importance of maintaining public order and interfaith harmony during this period. Religious and traditional groups are urged to respect each other's practices and avoid making derogatory remarks.

Additionally, the GTC has imposed a ban on funeral rites and related gatherings.

To ensure compliance, a task force comprising AMA, Ghana Police Service, and Traditional Council representatives will be responsible for enforcing the ban.

The AMA has warned against unauthorized enforcement and urged all residents to abide by the guidelines to ensure a peaceful period.

The ban is part of the cultural rites leading up to the Homowo festival, a significant event in the Ga calendar.
