School of Hygiene students threaten government over unpaid allowances
The Coalition of School of Hygiene Students is requesting that their trainee allowances, which have been unpaid for two years since January 2023, be paid, including a full year's allowance for the Ho School of Hygiene's 2021 certificate batch.
The students, who are concerned about probable long-term unemployment, have discovered from interactions with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources that the delays are due to a lack of budgetary approval from the Ministry of Finance.
The Coalition's General Secretary, Emmanuel Awuku, highlighted the hardships facing the students and advocated for the posting of batches that had yet to be deployed. The students threaten to hold a protest if their demands are not met.
"School of Hygiene trainees are also health trainees and remain constitutionally eligible to receive our trainee allowances but it seems stakeholders are using technicalities to push our people off the scheme of trainee allowance and we haven’t received an allowance for two years now and some have even completed without receiving a Cedi as trainee allowance" he said.
