Akwatia Primaries Heat Up: Three NDC Aspirants Vie for Parliamentary Seat

Accra, Ghana – 29 July, 2025 – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to hold parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia constituency, with three aspirants having picked up nomination forms to contest the seat. The contenders include former MP Henry Boakye, current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali.

Per the party’s timelines, the three aspiring candidates with others who submit nominations before the deadline on Wednesday, 30 July will undergo vetting on Thursday, 31 July. Balloting will follow immediately to determine positions ahead of the primaries, scheduled for Monday, 4 August 2025.

The contest comes in the wake of the passing of the sitting MP, which has necessitated a by-election in the constituency.

Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive of Owuo Mining Company, as its parliamentary candidate.

The party stated that this decision emerged from wider stakeholder consultations, which led to an agreement rather than a contested primary.
