GH₵600,000 to Contest: NPP Opens Door to 2028 Presidential Elections

Accra, Ghana – 29 July, 2025 –The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially kicked off the process of selecting its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. According to NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, aspiring candidates will need to purchase nomination forms at GH₵100,000 and pay a filing fee of GH₵500,000, totaling GH₵600,000.

Justin Kodua emphasized at a press briefing ,"I'm happy to announce to you that we have officially opened nominations for our party members to become presidential candidates of our party for the 2028 elections,".

The party’s presidential primaries are slated to be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The nomination period commences today, July 29, 2025, and will close on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The substantial cost associated with contesting has sparked debate about inclusivity and the role of money in politics. Critics argue that high fees limit participation to only the wealthiest or those with significant financial backing, potentially alienating grassroots candidates.

The NPP's decision to open nominations nearly two and a half years before the elections highlights the party's intent to provide ample time for its flagbearer to prepare and unite the party ranks. This move also reflects a strategic focus on internal cohesion and external campaigning.

It's worth noting that the NPP's filing fees for presidential aspirants have varied in the past. In 2020, the party's filing fee was GH₵200,000, with a non-refundable application fee of GH₵20,000.
