Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi Passes Away
Akwatia, Eastern Region, Ghana - 7 July, 2025 - Ghanaian politician Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has passed away. Mr. Kumi, who represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP), died on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.
Mr. Kumi's tenure in Parliament was marked by controversy, particularly surrounding his election victory in December 2024. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenged the results, alleging vote buying and irregularities.
A High Court in Koforidua subsequently issued an interim injunction preventing Mr. Kumi from participating in parliamentary activities.
However, the Supreme Court later quashed a contempt conviction and affirmed Mr. Kumi's legitimacy as MP. The court's decision, delivered on June 11, 2025, effectively cleared Mr. Kumi of all legal encumbrances related to the case.
Formal statements and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by Parliament and the NPP leadership.
The circumstances surrounding Mr. Kumi's death are still unclear, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
