AFRIMASS Network Launches Pioneering Mentorship Program for Young Journalists

Accra, Ghana - 08 May, 2025 - Raymond Smith, Founder of the AFRIMASS Network, has launched a pioneering mentorship program under the Newsroom Business Initiative (NBI) to equip young journalists with the skills and ethical frameworks needed to navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape.

The program, announced on May 2, 2025, at BlueCrest University in Accra, aims to bridge the gap between academic training and newsroom practice by pairing emerging journalists with seasoned professionals, technology experts, educators, and business leaders.

The mentorship program will focus on four key areas: practical training in news reporting and digital content production, ethical journalism, AI integration, and media entrepreneurship. Smith emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI tools serve the truth and public good, while also promoting strong editorial judgment and integrity in reporting.
“AI is transforming journalism in ways we could not have imagined a decade ago. It enhances speed, accuracy and access to data-driven insights. But it also presents serious risks — from misinformation and algorithmic bias to the undermining of editorial judgment,” he said.
“As we embrace these tools, it is crucial to ensure they serve the truth and the public good. Freedom of expression remains paramount, but it must be matched by an equally strong sense of responsibility.”
The program is expected to be rolled out in phases starting in the second half of 2025, with applications opening in June. The launch event, held to mark World Press Freedom Day 2025, brought together media professionals, journalism students, and educators to discuss the future of journalism in the age of AI.
Smith highlighted the benefits of mentorship for both emerging and experienced journalists, noting that it fosters a community of collaboration and shared learning.
“Mentorship is not a one-way relationship. Experienced journalists also benefit from the fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that young people bring,” he noted.
“The future of journalism lies in your hands,” he told the students. “This programme is an investment in your potential — to help you meet the demands of modern journalism with integrity, creativity and resilience.”
The initiative is part of the NBI's broader mission to ensure sustainability in the media sector, with a focus on promoting quality journalism and supporting the next generation of journalists.

The event was organized in collaboration with BlueCrest University College and supported by various partners, including AngloGold Ashanti, Mont Natural Mineral Water, Leatheroncall Gh, Customer Service Africa, Aladin Bakery and Snack Bar; and media outlets such as Graphic Communications Group and JoyNews, Norvan Reports, Ghanaweb, Leadnews, GBC, Graphic Online, Newswire GH, GH One TV, Woezor TV, Mx24 TV, and Starr FM,
