Ablekuma North Gets New MP as Ewurabena Aubynn Sworn in Amid Parliamentary Drama

Accra, Ghana – 22 July, 2025 - Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took the oath of office as Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in a ceremony marked by a walkout by the Minority caucus. The swearing-in was presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin, who denied a request by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh to make a statement before the oath.

A heated debate erupted when Frank Annoh-Dompreh attempted to address the House before the swearing-in.However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga objected, arguing that the Minority's statement should be made after the ceremony.

Speaker Alban Bagbin sided with the Majority Leader, ruling that the Minority would have the opportunity to speak after the swearing-in. Annoh-Dompreh expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling, stating that the Minority could not participate in the swearing-in ceremony.

Subsequently, the Minority caucus walked out of the chamber in protest. Despite their absence, the ceremony proceeded without disruption, and Aubynn was officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.

Ewurabena Aubynn's swearing-in as Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North follows a highly contested rerun election in 19 polling stations. The Electoral Commission nullified the original December 2024 results due to electoral irregularities, including unsigned pink sheets and vote tally discrepancies. In the rerun, Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating NPP's Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes.

This decisive victory not only marked a significant win for the National Democratic Congress but also solidified its parliamentary majority
