Sakumono, Klagon, Tema: REGSEC Demolishes Unauthorized Structures in Major Operation

Accra, Ghana – 22 July, 2025 - The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), under the leadership of Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, has resumed the demolition of unauthorized structures on protected Ramsar sites in Sakumono, Klagon, and Tema.

Following severe flooding in the Tema West Municipality that caused extensive property damage, authorities have identified illegal encroachments in the Sakumo Ramsar site as a contributing factor.

The site has seen numerous buildings constructed on natural watercourses and wetlands, contravening environmental regulations. In response, REGSEC has resumed demolition operations as part of a broader effort to protect the Ramsar site, prevent future flooding, and preserve the region's ecological balance.

As part of an initiative to protect the environment and prevent flooding, REGSEC, in collaboration with National Security and NADMO, has been demolishing illegal structures within the Ramsar site. The ongoing demolition exercise is a proactive measure to avert future disasters and restore the ecological integrity of the Ramsar sites.
