Accra, Ghana – 22 July, 2025 – The Supreme Court of Ghana has quashed a 2020 arrest warrant issued against social commentator Kelvin Taylor in a 4-1 majority decision. The warrant was issued by Justice Eric Kyei-Baffour, a Court of Appeal judge sitting as a High Court judge, over alleged contemptuous comments Taylor made about the judge's impartiality in a case involving the National Communications Authority.

The Supreme Court panel that ruled on Kevin Taylor's case on Tuesday July 22, 2025, consisted of Justice Imoro Amadu Tanko as Presiding judge , Justice Senyo Dzamefe ,Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh,Justice Philip Bright Mensah , Justice Ernest Gaewu who’s the only one to disagree with the majority decision.

The court's 4-1 majority ruling quashed the arrest warrant issued against Kevin Taylor in 2020, citing procedural irregularities and violations of Taylor's right to a fair hearing.

Key Highlights of the Case:

Contempt Charge: Taylor was accused of scandalizing the court by alleging that Justice Kyei-Baffour's promotion was linked to his handling of the NCA case in favor of the then-government.

Procedural Irregularities: The Supreme Court ruled that the warrant was issued without due process, violating Taylor's right to a fair hearing. The court emphasized that Taylor was not given the opportunity to be heard before the warrant was issued.

Implications for Media Freedom: The ruling is expected to spark debates on media freedom, judicial authority, and the regulation of online commentary in Ghana. It highlights the complexities of enforcing local legal decisions against individuals operating from foreign jurisdictions.

Kelvin Taylor known for his outspoken commentary on Ghanaian politics and social issues through his platform "With All Due Respect," is seen as a polarizing figure in public discourse.

Background:
