Ablakwa Accuses Akufo-Addo's Gov't of Paying National Cathedral Staff Despite CHRAJ Report
Accra, Ghana 04 Jan, 2025 - Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, has slammed the outgoing Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration for allegedly continuing to pay staff of the National Cathedral Secretariat despite the project's questionable legitimacy.
In a Facebook post, Ablakwa stated that, according to intercepted payment records, staff members received salaries ranging from GHS20,721.00 to GHS29,838.00 just four days ago.
This development comes on the heels of a November CHRAJ report that deemed the cathedral project illegal and recommended prosecution of associated officials. The project, touted as President Akufo-Addo's "priority of priorities," has been marred by controversy, with an estimated US$58 million spent on the unfinished structure.
Ablakwa's accusations highlight the perceived insensitivity of the outgoing government, which has prioritized salary payments for the cathedral's staff over the welfare of Ghanaian taxpayers.
The MP's statement also hints at a larger issue of financial mismanagement, with the cathedral project having been abandoned for 33 months.
