A Suspect Doesn't Dictate Investigation Terms, We Want Him Here Physically - OSP Refuses Ofori Atta Virtual Session Request

Accra, Ghana - 03 June, 2025 - The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has refused to grant former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's request to appear virtually for questioning, insisting that he must present himself physically despite his reported health issues.

According to sources, Ofori-Atta's legal team had submitted medical documentation to the OSP and the Human Rights Court, citing his need for surgical procedures and unfitness for in-person engagement.

However, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng emphasized that the office will not accommodate virtual appearances, stating that suspects in criminal investigations cannot dictate the terms of the investigation.

Agyebeng noted that if the OSP were willing to take statements in absentia, they would have done so in February instead of waiting until June 2, 2025.

The OSP has declared Ofori-Atta wanted and activated an INTERPOL Red Alert for him after the former Finance Minister failed to appear in person as directed, signaling no compromise in the investigative process.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case.”
