We have no intention to stage a coup - GAF
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have flatly dismissed reports that they had vowed to seize control of the country if the forthcoming 2024 elections turn violent.
This statement follows a publication that attributed similar assertions to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).
In a news release made on Friday, August 23, 2024, GAF stated that they have never conducted a press conference stating their plan to stage a coup.
The statement stressed that GAF's role is to assist the Ghana Police Service on request, and that this assistance does not imply the overthrow of the government.
According to Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations, who signed the press release, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”
