WAEC reports several malpractices, vows to sanction culprits as 2024 WASSCE ends

Accra, Ghana - The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) successfully administered the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to 460,611 school candidates across Ghana.

The examination, which started on August 5 and ended on September 20, was conducted at 1,000 centers nationwide, involving 1,003 participating schools.

A multi-agency team comprising WAEC staff, monitoring agents, National Intelligence Bureau personnel, Ghana Police Service, National Security, and Ghana Education Service ensured the examination's integrity. The Ghana National Association of Teachers also played a vital role in monitoring the process.

Although most candidates, supervisors, and invigilators followed examination rules, WAEC inspectors identified instances of malpractice. These included unauthorized material smuggling, answer photocopying, and mobile phone usage within exam halls. The Council will sanction culpable examination officials and stakeholders according to regulatory provisions.

WAEC appreciated stakeholders who reported cheating attempts and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible examinations in a statement issued on Thursday, September 26, Despite challenges, the Council remains dedicated to upholding examination integrity.

“Most candidates also adhered to the Dos and Don'ts of the examination communicated to them during the sensitisation of candidates prior to the conduct of the examination,” part of the statement read.

“The Council will take appropriate action to ensure that all examination officials and stakeholders who were found culpable are sanctioned in accordance with the appropriate provisions of the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination,” the statement said.

Results are expected to be released within weeks, and candidates can access their scores on the WAEC website or via SMS.
