President Mahama Launches 'No Fees Stress' Policy
Koforidua, Eastern Region - 4 July, 2025 - Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, has launched the "No Fees Stress" policy, a flagship initiative aimed at improving access to tertiary education for students in public institutions.
The policy waives academic user fees for all first-year students and forms part of Mahama's broader "Reset Ghana" agenda to alleviate financial pressure on vulnerable families.
Speaking at the launch in Koforidua, Mahama said the policy was inspired by stories of brilliant but needy students he encountered before becoming president.
He emphasized that financial constraints should not hinder talented students from pursuing higher education.
The policy has already seen significant uptake, with nearly 130,000 students registering online and over 100,000 completing the application process by mid-June.
According to the Students Loan Trust Fund, at least 195,000 students have received fee reimbursements, and 19,703 students have received second-semester loans.
Government officials, including the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and the Acting CEO of the Students Loan Trust Fund, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, have confirmed that the policy will be extended to students living with physical challenges.
Mr Iddrisu also announced government's plan to increase funding for the Students Loan Trust Fund, with the GETFund doubling its allocation from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million.
"GETFUND will double its allocation to the Students Loan Trust Fund from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million to support students who may wish to access it further."
