Twin toddlers drown in abandoned galamsey pit
Twifo Praso, Central Region, Ghana - A devastating incident has claimed the lives of two-and-a-half-year-old twins in Morkwaa, a farming community near Twifo Praso.
The male and female twins fell into an abandoned galamsey pit filled with water on Thursday, marking the eighth fatality caused by uncovered galamsey pits in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District this year.
According to George Sam, Assembly member for Morkwa Electoral Area, the mother of the twins had been resting due to illness while the children played in the courtyard. Upon waking, she discovered their absence and searched the house before finding their lifeless bodies in the abandoned pit near her home.
The police have commenced investigations, and the bodies have been taken to the Twifo-Praso Government Hospital Morgue for preservation. Concerned residents are calling on the Assembly to reclaim the land and prevent further tragedies, citing the numerous exposed galamsey pits in the community.
This heart-wrenching incident highlights the urgent need for action to address the dangers posed by abandoned galamsey pits in the region.
