TUC gives Gov't September deadline to address Galamsey

Accra, Ghana - The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has issued an ultimatum to the government, threatening a nationwide strike if decisive action is not taken against illegal small-scale mining by the end of September.

In a statement, TUC Secretary General demanded:

- Declaration of a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas
- Immediate halt to mining in forest reserves
- Establishment of special courts to prosecute offenders
- Deployment of military to dismantle mining equipment

The union blames government inaction for widespread environmental destruction, vowing to lay down tools if demands are not met. The move could bring key sectors to a grinding halt, piling pressure on the government to tackle the illicit mining crisis.
