Akonta Mining in Hot Water: Coalition Against Galamsey Calls for Immediate Prosecution

Accra, Ghana - 19 May, 2025 - The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey is pressing the government to take decisive action against Akonta Mining Ltd, accusing the company of engaging in illegal mining activities that have caused significant environmental damage.
Despite evidence of the company's alleged wrongdoing, the Coalition says the government has failed to act, sparking "shock and disappointment."
Akonta Mining has reportedly been operating illegally since 2022, polluting the Tano River and destroying the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. An investigation by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources backs these claims. While the government has frozen the company's bank accounts, the Coalition argues this is not enough and demands full prosecution.
The group in a statement released on Sunday, May 18, and signed by its Convenor, Kenneth Ashigbey, also wants officials who may have enabled or ignored Akonta Mining's activities to be held accountable.
The Coalition's call highlights concerns over environmental degradation and the need for effective enforcement of mining regulations in Ghana.
