Aluta Continua! We Will Not Give Up on the Fight Against Galamsey - Mahama

Black Star Square, Accra - 01 May, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government's commitment to combating illegal mining activities in Ghana, despite acknowledging the complexity of the issue.

Speaking on May Day, Mahama emphasized that his administration will continue to crack down on individuals and companies involved in galamsey, a move that has seen significant progress since his government took office on January 7, 2025.

“The fight against galamsey is a complex one and when I was vying for Presidency, I promised that when I come into office, I will win that fight in four months yet we will not give up'', he declared.

Mahama's government has vowed to continue its efforts to protect the environment and water bodies from the devastating effects of galamsey, with the President declaring "Aluta Continua" (the struggle continues) in the fight against illegal mining.

“Our gallant men in Armed Forces and security services are up to the fight and we will continue to score successes against the selfish companies and individuals who are destroying our environment and water bodies. As far as the fight against galamsey is concerned, I say Aluta Continua,” Mahama added.

Mahama's assurance comes on the back of several successful operations by the anti-galamsey task force, which has arrested dozens of individuals, including foreign nationals, and seized excavators and other equipment used in illegal mining activities.

In recent months, joint operations by the Forestry Commission, Armed Forces, and police have resulted in the arrest of 47 individuals, including 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals, and the seizure of 17 excavators and one bulldozer.

The President's commitment to tackling galamsey has been evident in the government's actions, with a joint security operation on April 25 leading to the arrest of a Chinese national, an Indian, a Burkinabe, and other Ghanaians involved in illegal mining activities.
