Police fire warning shots at NPP Walewale primaries re-run

Walewale, Ghana - September 9, 2024 - A parliamentary primary re-run in Walewale was disrupted when a former NPP chairman, Akamari Bawa, snatched a ballot box, prompting police to fire warning shots to restore order.

The incident occurred during the sorting of ballot papers in the fiercely contested election between incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Zuweratu and Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, Special Advisor to the Vice President.

The suspect was arrested and the ballot box was taken to the police station, where counting is expected to resume.

NPP's 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, confirmed Joy FM's Newsnite, that election officials are waiting for both candidates at the police station to proceed with the counting process.

“Currently, as I am talking to you, we are at the Walewale police station waiting for both candidates to come with their agents. The Electoral Commission is here, the police commander is here. We are going to recount the ballot at the police station so that whoever won, the Electoral Commission would then declare the result,'' he stated.

This re-run was ordered by the Tamale High Court last month, following a challenge to the initial election results by Hajia Lariba Zuweratu.

The court's full judgment is expected on September 12, just a week before the nomination deadline for the December 7 election.
