EC disqualifies Roman Fada of GFP from 2024 Presidential race
Accra, Ghana - Nov 12, 2024 - The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the replacement flagbearer for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), due to errors and irregularities found on his nomination form. This announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa at a press conference held today, November 12.
The GFP had been dealt a significant blow following the sudden death of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Akua Donkor, on October 15. The party was given a 10-day window by the EC to submit a new nomination, which led to Kubi's appointment.
However, upon reviewing Kubi's documentation, the EC identified several issues that went beyond simple clerical errors.
According to Jean Mensa, while the GFP corrected some of the errors, other elements were deemed "illegitimate" and couldn't be accepted under electoral laws. The EC's primary concern is upholding the integrity of the electoral process, and as such, cannot overlook any irregularities, regardless of the party's efforts to rectify them.
This development comes just weeks before the December 7 presidential election, where Ghanaians will head to the polls to elect their next president. The GFP's disqualification is likely to have significant implications for the party's supporters and the overall outcome of the election.
