Re-collation has happened before, it's nothing new - EC
Ghana's Electoral Commission has defended its decision to re-examine election results in nine constituencies, citing precedents from past elections where re-collation led to changes in declared outcomes.
In a statement on their X account(formerly twitter), the EC stated that historical records show that re-collation is not a new phenomenon in Ghana's electoral history.
“Re-collation after the declaration of results is not new. It has happened before,'' portions of the tweet read.
According to them, in 1998, the Electoral Commission, under the leadership of Dr. Afari Gyan, overturned an earlier declaration in the Dompose Kokwaado Electoral Area, declaring the correct candidate as the winner.
The Ec also cited instances of re-collation occurred in 2004, affecting parliamentary results in several constituencies, including Pru, Tolon, Yapei-Kusawgu, and Zabzugu. According to the EC, in each case, the re-collation led to the declaration of the rightful winner, demonstrating the importance of this process in ensuring the integrity of the electoral outcome.
