My faith doesn’t permit same-sex marriages - Mahama
Accra, Ghana - John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has reaffirmed his commitment to combating LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, pledging to intensify efforts to strengthen legislation against the community if he wins the 2024 elections.
Speaking to clergy members in Accra, Mahama expressed frustration over the delayed passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill under President Akufo-Addo's administration. The bill, which was unanimously passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has been stalled due to ongoing legal challenges at the Supreme Court.
Mahama rooted his stance on the LGBTQ+ issue in his personal faith and values, aligning with the majority of Ghanaians who oppose legalization or normalization of LGBTQ+ practices. He assured religious leaders that his government would prioritize this issue, ensuring swift enactment of the anti-LGBTQ+ law once in office.
“My faith doesn’t permit same-sex marriages or relationships, nor does it endorse human-animal relationships or allow people to change their gender as they wish.”
“This is a fundamental belief that I hold, and it is grounded in my faith. I therefore assure you that the promotion of LGBTQ+ will have no place in our schools and communities,” he stated.
