La demonstrators clash with Police
The police and leaders of the ongoing La Coalition demonstration have disagreed over the protest route.
The march, which began on Tuesday, July 30, intends to highlight alleged unethical land seizures by political organizations in the Greater Accra Region.
The demonstrators, who represent several unions and associations in the La Traditional Area, are seeking the restitution of state lands that they believe are being shared by the political class.
The griup claims they are more concerned about the Trade Fair land, which includes portions occupied by the Labadi Beach and La Palm Royal Beach Hotels, and claims that the original owners have not received the legally required compensation.
They also expressed worries over the Prisons Service lands at Cantonments, which a private developer intends to rebuild.
But during the protest, misunderstanding erupted over the route, with police claiming they could not guarantee demonstrators' safety if they marched to Kpletso, near Burma Camp.
The protest's lead organizer, according to Channel One News, disputed that the demonstrators intended to march to Kpletso, saying, "We are not going to Kpletso land; the police are behaving like cowards." They don't want to face the troops." Instead, the demonstrators will head to Christ the King to meet with a government representative and present their petition.
He claimed the police had refused to provide security for the rally since the outset, forcing the organizers to furnish their own.
He also underlined that the demonstrators are law-abiding individuals who will accept responsibility if something goes wrong. "We are not people who flee from anything. The commander knows who I am, and I am not running away. Come after me if you think we've done something wrong. But do not try to suppress us " he remarked.
