Ghanaian WWII Veteran Joseph Ashitey Hammond Releases Memoir at 99
Accra, Ghana - September 23, 2024 - Ghanaian World War II veteran Joseph Ashitey Hammond has released his highly anticipated autobiography, offering a glimpse into his remarkable life and decades-long service to the nation.
At 99 years old, Hammond is the last surviving witness to the historic February 28 Crossroad incident, having enlisted in the Gold Coast Regiment at just 16 years old. His memoir chronicles his extraordinary journey, from wartime service to his ongoing commitment to philanthropy and peace.
The book launch, held at the Kofi Annan International Training Centre in Teshie, attracted esteemed guests including Teshie Mankralo Nii Okang Duamro III, Vice Marshal Felix Asante, and Hon. Ayikwe Otoo. The Ghana Armed Forces honored Hammond with a citation for his exceptional service.
Renowned musician Adotey Tetor performed during the ceremony, while celebrated broadcaster Kafui Dey served as auctioneer.
