AMA Cracks Down on Vehicles Caught Flouting Loading Rules

Accra, Ghana - 26 June, 2025 -

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun enforcing a new directive restricting loading and unloading activities in the city to specific hours, as part of efforts to ease congestion and promote discipline in the capital.

Vehicles found flouting the rules will be clamped, and owners will be prosecuted at the AMA Sanitation Court. The new regulation limits street loading and unloading to between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. daily.

According to Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the AMA, the move aims to reduce daytime congestion and safeguard pedestrians and traders during peak hours.

“We introduced this time restriction to reduce daytime congestion and safeguard both pedestrians and traders during peak hours,” he explained.

The AMA had taken steps to raise public awareness about the new policy before implementation, deploying a mobile public address system to broadcast the changes in both English and local languages. "We're not just enforcing, we're informing," Ankrah emphasized.

The clampdown forms part of a broader strategy to consolidate progress made in the ongoing decongestion exercise and promote a culture of order, discipline, and urban cleanliness in Accra. Vehicles found violating the directive in areas such as the Central Business District and Makola have already been fined.

The AMA has urged drivers, delivery vans, and commercial transport operators to adhere to the designated street loading hours and use approved terminals, off-street loading bays, and designated delivery zones to avoid inconvenience. The operation will be sustained and extended to other hotspots to restore control over urban space usage during working hours.
