Accra, Ghana - 30 June, 2025 - The Ghana Police Service has sounded the alarm on a surge in human trafficking cases, where unsuspecting Ghanaians are lured to countries within the ECOWAS sub-region with false promises of employment, education, or other opportunities.

According to DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), a recent operation in collaboration with Interpol led to the rescue of 66 victims in Nigeria who were linked to a QNET-related trafficking network.

She disclosed that he victims, mostly young Ghanaians, were deceived with promises of recruitment into football academies or high-paying jobs abroad, only to find themselves subjected to exploitative conditions upon arrival. Their movements were restricted, and personal documents confiscated, leaving them vulnerable and trapped. The rescue operation took place between May 19 and June 27, 2025.

DCOP Donkor at a press briefing in Accra urged the public, particularly young job seekers, to exercise caution when considering employment or educational offers outside Ghana.

She also urged families and community members to help verify such offers and report any suspicious activities to the police without delay.

"These scammers use deception, coercion, and deny victims access to travel documents. Such actions are criminal and punishable by law. Anyone found guilty of luring individuals into such schemes will be arrested and prosecuted," she warned.
