Accra,Ghana – October 27,2025 - The Mahama administration has assured that a substantive Minister of Defence will be appointed by President John Dramani Mahama in due course, ending speculation and concerns over the prolonged vacancy.

Since the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, which claimed the life of former Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has been serving as acting Defence Minister.

However, the absence of a permanent head at the ministry has raised eyebrows, with various stakeholders, including former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP Dominic Nitiwul, calling for a swift appointment amidst rising security threats in the West African region.

Nitiwul expressed concern over the delay, emphasizing Ghana's need for strong and focused leadership at the Defence Ministry to ensure stability and continuity. He suggested that the President could either promote the current deputy minister or nominate a new minister.

Addressing these concerns on Channel One TV on Monday, October 27, Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, dismissed suggestions that appointing a successor would be challenging.

Felix Ofosu stressed that President Mahama is a professional and pragmatic leader who understands the importance of effective leadership at the Defence Ministry.

The Minister's assurance comes at a time when Ghana and the West African region are facing increasing security threats, including terrorism, piracy, and armed robbery.
